Halachic Tape Measure
Background of the
Tape Measure
Halacha and Gemorah contain numerous measurements, and many mitzvos require specific measurements to be considered halachically kosher. For example, the straps of tefillin must measure the size of a se’orah, the tzitzis must be one amah by one amah, the walls of a sukkah must be at least ten tefachim tall, and a house that requires a mezuzah must measure four amos by four amos.

But what exactly are the measurements for each of these?
There is a debate regarding their modern-day application. Our tape measure follows the opinion of Rabbi Chaim Noeh, as outlined in his work Shiurei Torah. This tape measure provides the names and sizes of each measurement and explains how they relate to one another and how they multiply to reach the next measurement.
In many cases, we add a 48th of a measurement to ensure stringency due to halachic doubt. This practice is also indicated on the tape measure, and the examples of these stringencies are detailed in the aforementioned Sefer.

Purpose of the
Tape Measure
The tape measure serves an educational purpose by illustrating Halachic measurement systems. It teaches students:

-
the precise distance of each Halachic measurement;

-
that these systems are based on a primary unit of

-
measurement, with other units being multiples of it;

-
that each measurement has a unique name, derived from the object it is based on; and

-
that it is a practical tool for various mitzvos, which are clearly indicated on the tape measure.

Additionally, it serves as an excellent visual aid for teaching Halacha, as it provides an accurate representation of the required measurements.
Target Market
Teachers & students in Upper Primary, High School, Mesivta or Yeshiva Gedolah.
Uniques of this method
-
It is a visual & tangible educational experience
-
It is a realistic experience
Classroom Implementation
The cups can be used in Chumash, Mishna, or Gemorah classes as visual aids for learning. They can also serve as standalone lessons, illustrate specific halachos, and function as assessment tools to demonstrate understanding of a halacha.
